To be honest, I haven't been active on the Demo Scene for many years now. I've only watched different productions from time to time and written some articles for a site on the Internet. When I was active, my main fub)bnction was swapping, or mailtrading if you like. I enjoyed it a lot and gained contacts and friends all over the world. Due to the emergence of the Internet as a widespread phenomenon, swapping slowly faded away and became a thing of the past. Because of this, my motivation for being active faded away, and now many years later I see that the Scene is still alive and kicking. That is a good sign and I think it's great that you all keep the community up and going.But, b*"what is it exactly that makes the Scene alive and blossoming? Is it the various message boards, chats, or sites on the Internet? They play their roles too of course, but the most important thing is the productions. In my subjective opinion, especially diskmags and chartmags, as they can be viewed as part of the glue that holds everything together. The demos themselves are of course the most important, as there wouldn't have been a Scene without them in the firstb+X place. In this context, Versus plays an important role. Page 6 After having read through the latest issue of Versus, I actually felt the urge to contribute to the next issue, but since I cannot do any graphics, compose music, or do any programming (other than AMOS Basic), I thought I could just write a few words about what I think of the production. It is not much, but it is at least something, and as I remember Sb,͙oda/Scoopex writing many years ago, "the Scene ain't a spectators sport, participate!". With these words, I give you my thoughts regarding Versus. There are several bits and pieces of Versus that I like. First of all, I think it's great that the chart is being released on a regularly basis. Today, that is a quite extraordinary, thinking of the low amount of voters. Still it seems like the crew behind the production manages to collect a decent pile of b-l~them every issue. That is a good accomplishment. It was also fun browsing through the charts and to see which group or demo is the most popular one these days. I quickly noticed that many old classics are still present and that clearly shows that they have stood the test of time. Kefrens was as always popular, which is not strange thinking of the kick ass stuff they used to produce. Page 7 Beside the charts,b.}- I think there could be more articles included, but that does of course depend on the readers. If people contribute, there will be more to read. Maybe Versus will grow as time passes? That will be interesting to see. Beside this, I think the overall atmosphere of the production was very good. If you compare the graphics with old legendary productions like Defy, Traschan, Seenpoint, Generation, and so on, it is not as good. But is that the most important thing? Theb/cQ graphics are nice and the panels works like they should. After all, a chartmag or a diskmag is not made purely to show off a panel, it is all about the contents. If the contents are interesting, that is in my opinion the most important thing. What I loved about the latest issue of Versus wasn't solely the articles, charts, music or panels. It wasn't the file_id.diz that was included, or that it works on an Amiga 500. It was simply, believe it or not, that it inspired mb0Ge to do something for the Scene once again. It is a feeling I haven't had in many years, and Versus made it surface again. That I think is a quality stamp for sure. Whats the point? Where do you place that Amiga graphician with no activity with Amiga software? Or a c64 artistb4ŭԀ finding it cool to have pixel logos in a PC-demo? Where do you place an nostalgic PC artist finding it trendy with Paintbrush? What we have to face now, is that graphicians are going into a new cycle. The boundaries are beeing erased between platforms-belongings for them. In Azine magazine 2003 I wrote about the platform independent Ascii-scene. Now the it's time for the graphicians to make the same move. Freely or forced by others. So a reengineering or at least a rethib54nking has to be made in rearranging the boundaries where we place a graphician today. Page 11 Charts and voting lists in mags or on the internet should instead be seperated as something like this: oldscool and newscool artists or fossils vs futurism or jaggies vs AA but in all those pretty name suggestions, where do we place 3D graphicians?
