Welcome to Masters Space Empire, which was written by me Robert Masters.. First, credits must be given to John Radoff, who wrote the original space empire, and the Ken Smith for his improved version. This was written off Ken Smiths code, but is now very dissimilar from his original with only some algorithms and support functions being constant. More credits should be given to Norbert Feist for all his help, testing aД˭nd support. With so many other versions of Space Empire around, you might wonder why I would want to make another. The main reasons were this : 1. We were using MAXsBBS software which didn't support the full paragon standard, and so messages couldn't be sent. 2. KSE had bugs when running multi-line. 3. I wanted to put together all the ideas from all the Space Empires into one version. 4. I had a lot of ideas on improving the game. 5. Why not ? 6. I like spending hours in frontxlb of my Amiga bashing my head against the monitor. Anyway, read the installation docs (very easy) and ENJOY ! Files in archive: ----------------- MSE - The game itself, for any cpu. MSE.master - MSE master controler. MSE.doc - Instructions for the game read by player MSE.ReadMe - This file MSE.History - A history of changes made MSE.Registration - What do you think... Show_News - A door to display the global news. Add_Invite 7 - Door to add players to the invited list. Setup Instructions. ------------------- It's very easy to set up. MSE requires only a few files, it will create what it needs. First requirement is that you have MSE: assigned somewhere, preferably in your doors: directory, MSE will save its files there and also expect to find MSE.doc in the same directory. Copy MSE.docs into the assign. If you want to use the fast file access then you should have T: assigned to ram:. The MSE.masterӹA program should be in your MSE: directory, as it needs to be called from MSE. You will also have to set up an environment file for MSE, see the options below for details. You must have : 1. Version 36+ of KickStart. 2. Fast Ram at any location. 3. A BBS ! MSE.master ---------- Leave this program in the MSE: directory, it will be run when MSE loads. Or if you wish, you may run it beforehand. This is the controler that looks after the data files for MSE to allow shared access for 6 multinode bbs'. Once run it will stay in memory unless due to some problem it will remove itself. Do not run it more than once, it is best to let MSE run it for you, as it knows what to do. Show_News --------- Just run this door to display all the global news generated in MSE. This was added since the news in no longer held in the ascii format of KSE. This should be placed in your doors directory or as required by your bbs, it does not support any arguments, but you must have MSEbi;: assigned. If no data files are found, or MSE is writing to them, it will exit. Add_Invite ---------- This door is used to add players to the invited list when you are running a game under invitation only. Sorry it isn't much, but it works 8^).. MSE.doc ------- This is the docments for MSE, put them into the MSE: directory, and if you can, please make it available for downloading. These are available for viewing whithin MSE, but you can make them seperate if you wish as they 0are quite long. MSE.key and Registration notes ------------------------------ Registration is $ 15.00, just fill out the form and send it to me, and we will log onto your bbs and create a key file for you. It simply contains your bbs name. It's main purpose is so that I have a list of all bbs' in Australia running MSE so that we can have a super playoff. Unregistered versions will display a The Nut Factory BBS advertisment at the end of the game, and a few second delay. The 5 pla [yers limit on unregistered versions has been removed, mainly due to the fact that overseas users wanted to register, but it was too expensive to arrange cheques. 1: DO NOT erase the key file, if you do MSE will revert back to an unregistered version. 2: NO NOT change anything in the key file, if you do MSE will most likly find a CRC error and exit. MSE will generate a small data file called MSE.Super, this has the data on all the people that have successfully won MSE. At some tim e in the near future the 'MSE Super Challange' will be held at The Nut Factory BBS. To enter players from your BBS, all I need is the data file. As the competition draws nearer, I will arrange with you to collect the files. Players will be by invitation only, and they must have won at MSE on a bbs previously. Each player will not only be playing for themselves, but also for their 'home' bbs. We may have some prize arranged for the winner of the game. Options ------- You must have ,9 a file called 'MSE' in the ENV: directory, with a string containing any of the following options of you want to use them. Use SetEnv to make this file, but you must copy the file from ENV: to ENVARC: if you want to reload it after a reboot. eg: SetEnv MSE "FAST" Sorry that MSE no longer uses arguments, but Excelsior does not allow arguments to be passed to Paragon doors, and I'm not going to have differant standards for differant bbs'. PARAGON - If you have a Paragon complient b bs, you may wish to use your bbs' internal full screen editor instead of MSEs inbuilt line editor. You must have T: assigned for this, as the files will be written there temporarily. FAST - This option copies the datafiles into T: so that all message and news will be much faster. When there are around 10 players, you may find that there could be as many 50 news items every day, and they will appear much more quickly if you use this option. TIME - This option allows for 150% of pla kyers time spend in the door to be returned to them. INVITE - Only players that have their name (real name) on the Invite.list can play the game, this is for use with SuperChallanges. These are the options you should use for your bbs software, FAST and TIME can be used with any bbs: MAXsBBS - (No Paragon editor support) Paragon/ StarNet / MEBBS - PARAGON Excelsior - PARAGON - Set up as a Paragon doo|K}r !!! CNet - PARAGON ? DLG - PARAGON ? Metro - PARAGON ? For others, if you have problems with the hotkeys then use the EXCEL command to turn them into prompts, and if available use the PARAGON command for a full screen editor. Please let me know if their are any bugs with your bbs that I should patch into MSE. Ami-Express, Tempest, SkyLine do not support any Paragon commHUCands. Note that some bbs' will send the node number as an argument, and this is how most doors pickup their node. This isn't required for MSE, it will search for it's own node (DoorControl Port), and correctly linkup. Author ------ For bug reports , upgrades and registration: Robert Masters - Co-Sysop or Norbert Feist - Sysop The Nut Factory BBS (02) 822 4366 (3 lines rotary) 2400/9600/12000/14400 - MNP/V42/V42bis MAXsNET 3:30000/50 (The Nut Factory) AmigaNet 41:200/61W3 Many thanks to Norbert Peter Feist for all of his support, ideas and the suicide testing. Special thanks to Ken Smith and John Raddoff who wrote this game, and distributed the source code to let people like me improve on it, or learn from it. The future ---------- If you have any ideas for additions then I would be happy to include them. Currently I have started work on my next project 'Nexus BBS', which might be available in early 1994, it will have simplicity of MAXs buts some more powerful features found in Excelsior and Starnet. If you are a MAXs sysop, and have any suggestions for a new bbs, then please leave me a message. Sysop notes... -------------- When the game is won, the winner will have his details recorded in Winner.txt, which is shown when a new player logs on, and his name recorded in the Hall_Fame.txt, which is shown on request or from outside the program. MSE will then automaticaly start a new game, it will delete all the old filnes, and restart while still in the game. If you want to restart the game while in progress, use the program called NewGame, this will restart a new game automatily for you. Please let me know if you have any helpful hints or suggestions (or bugs) that I can include in the next version.(not the bugs) Pressing 'V' on the buying menu will bring up all version numbers and infomation that is useful, This is mostly for my own use. Do not use the editor that comes with KSE, I use a total0ly differant format to save the data files and you will only screw it all up. You may wish to have some files available for display outside of the main program, the text file which can be displayed are: Scores.txt - List of all players, planets and rank. Winner.txt - Statistics on the last winner of MSE. Hall_Fame.txt - List of all players that have won MSE. All players will be given back 150% of their time spent playing MSE as an incentive to play. The usual disclaimers+, legal stuff, etc. --------------------------------------- This program may be distributed as giftware software. Public Releases are those that were released into the public domain. This is the format for version strings: Major Revision . (Revision or Addition) [minor bug fix] V1.0 - (Beta Test) Fixed upCr!> the code a bit, added the message base, added disaster round, bank loans and communications check, fixed problems with players losing troops when the enemy had none. V1.1 - (Beta Test) Fixed up screen clearing codes, fixed some problems with multi-node/line BBS's. V1.2 - (Beta Test) Fixed up message editor so blank lines could be added, added new part so new players could read all the old news, another new part so that aliances could advertise. Personal couriers can be send to oYjther players bearing gifts, and encrypted messages to avoid tapps. Also added line counter for large messages. Door wasn't cleaning up ram when it closed - fixed. Added 3 new message bases for alliance leaders. Fixed more probems with multinode. Fixed global messages. V1.22 - (Beta test) Added a file lock for multiline BBS's, Changed the data file structure again for amusement (and some later additions). Added hidden option 'V' on the buying screen for version numbers and informatijon. Added more file checking routines, so that older data files won't be accidently used and so that MSE creates new files properly (data codes are only stored in the player data files, so don't use old team files !) V1.23 - (Public Release) Added optional text file for filelocks, Fixed problem with crash when trying to reply to private messages, added OS2 internal version numbers (wow!) Rewrote some of the flakey message funtions. Fixed problem with file staying locked after makeimUVng new data files. Rewrote crypto() modules, and reduced datafile size. V1.25 - (Public Release) Prototyped the functions to ANSI, fixed up some typo errors, and problems with crashing. Program will load into fragmented memory now, as code has been split up more. Fixed problem where files would stay locked after initial creation. V1.26 - (Public Release) Added the train soldiers function, and the food stores function. Game now creates a text file when the game is won (only when the game is won, and the winner logs on and sees his congrats message), displaying info about the winner which is shown when new players login. The file created is called MSE:Winner.txt, so it can also be used to send messages to the new players... The version numbers are now stored in the header of the data-files (should have done that before !) so it knows exactley what files it's reading... V1.30 - (Beta Test) Whoops ! Game might crash if a message was replied to, Datafiles areq| not the same format, however you will have to delete the newsfile and start again, I decided to change to format to aid in scanning for dates. MSE now counts days since game started, mostly used for other purposes however, Added the 'Hall of Fame' file, so that all winners would be recorded, file is ASCII and can be displayed from outside the game, file is {doorspath}:{MSE-path}Hall_Fame.txt. Replaced the scores file, after seeing that some BBS's did use it to show the current score_s. Fixed bug where player would loose all food when trying to sell. And fixed bug where planets wern't updating after sale. Put in some delays as some data was being displayed too fast. Fixed up the screen clearing codes (again).MSE will now restart the game itself, with the following rule - the winner must logon to MSE AFTER he has won before the game will be started new, As the winner won't know he has won until he has loged on anyway, this shouldn't be a problem. All the message a /nd newsfiles are in a totally differant format, to solve a problem with not being read properly. They all have more robust data header to solve misread problems, and now hold more data. Added cargo ships (from the AREXX Space Empire), and view team option. Killed the file locking, as it seemed to be causing problems, instead mse open a new port 'MSE Port', and will check for this to see if MSE is active, this will also be used in future versions for similtaneous multi-line play. Adde >Vd new 'hidden' option, will appear when a set function has been triggered, Thanks to Norbert for the idea !! V1.40 - (Beta Test) The previous version was not worth releasing, since the whole message bases were really fucked, it was impossible to reply to a message (I still don't know why), so I have completly rewritten the message support. A file will be created called Message.Data, which will contain all the infomation about a message and the data that was previously stored within d the message. Messages will be saved as _Message.(number). Meaning that the messages will stay through out the game, so I'll get around to putting a function in to read old messages. So messages are not sent to players directley, but are instead dumped into a file, which is scanned through, and the relavent message number is picked out, this saves a LOT of time when sending global messages, as it does not have to be copied upto 50 times, or tapped messages, as it only needs to be cop v"!ied once, with just another appendation to the data file. Don't fuck with the data file ! I have put checks in it, and if you don't know the codes it will restart the game !!, As another result of this, player news and game news will have a differant format as well, The player news will be stored with the other messages, but will be acessed at a differant time to messages. Game news will also use a similar system, as there were problems with the news dating. This is fixed now with th ׍"Te new message system. The delete rotines have been cleaned up dramaticly, so everything will be deleted now, plus most of the code has undergone a lot of optimizing, hopefully I will keep it around the 150K mark, and I am working on speeding it all up, at least disk access is now FAAAAST. All the message files are now close to straight ascii, and can be displayed if you wish. But as the news file is within the message base, you cannot display it. I haven't optimized the scan r_Moutines very much, in fact it resans the whole file on every call, I will get around to fixing this, but it shouldn't be a problem with a small message base. Since it is now posible, I have added an option to view old messages, dont think you can re-read transporter codes and couriers as they are filtered !!. V1.41 - (Public Release) Fixed bug with MSE not creating new data files properly. Added the read previous option, this only goes one message back at this stage, and to put it"[ further would only make the program less usable. Moved a lot of shit around, and added a lot of new functions to clean up the code and put some speed where it needed it. V1.41a - (Public Release) Changed over to SAS 6.0, bloody hell it took some doing, but I changed all the code to ANSI, and picked up LOTS of little bugs in the comiling stage. Used lots of the new options to help the code along a bit, plus added some pretty ansi menus. I will try to have colour menus through out thڵ e whole game in the future. Fucked off the UNIX file functions I was using and went back to ANSI. Fixed a bug from KSE 101, that I only found out about when I saw KSE 101d. Mainly, it was that you couldn't take governing planets off someone, so it was impossible to kill them if thats all they had remaining. V1.42 - (Public Release) Redid the dataread/write functions (again), moved some code around to make it easier for myself. Added CheckSums to the datafiles.. Don't screw with the |Xdata dude ! If the game reads a dud data block, it will just halt the functions, and skip the rest. General cleapup, fixed up some memory trashing (again). Fixed up the transporter section, previusly you could only send one type of thing per convoy, you may now send all the differant things in one convoy. The Message.data file is now called _Message.data, this was just to tidy up the directory when I looked at it. Messages will now be saved in _Message.text. Fixed bug where MSE wJ4ould lock if it's directory did not exist. V1.50 - (Alpha Test) Tidied up all the code, fixed up all checks fo null pointers plus various other small bugs. Speed up random access files. Added Key file checking, see the ReadMe for more info. Redesigned internal message workings, added team ratings. All messages are working perfectly (Watch this space), as far as I can see. Added the option of using a bbs' inbuilt full screen message editor. Your bbs MUST be 100% Paragon compliant 5 to use this. Use the agrument at program startup - "PARAGON", this allows MSE to use the editor that may be called through the standard Paragon port commands. Message data is dumped in ram for fast scanning if you want it, it makes game play faster, but it will slow down a bit a the start and end of the game for copying. To activate this, use the argument "FAST". There have been a few new menus put in to tidy things up and the storage functions have added safety checks now. All޻Y{4 time delays removed and where neccasary have been replaced with "..press any key to continue...", increasing the speed of the game. Added several new ansi screens and put auto centering headers to the menus. V1.50a- (Beta Test) MSE would sometimes crash when writing files, added code to flush old files and removed files from register variables. Scanned through code with CodeProbe and removed some bugs found. V1.50b- (Beta Test) Crashing seems to be something to do with the ScotHres.txt or MSE.data, these files are now only written once when the door has shut down control. Extra checks have been added for lost carriers. V1.50c- (Beta Test) Temporary files weren't removed when user quitted from logon menu. Shrunk the code a bit more, and sped things up a bit. Changed the way the data files are written. * All MSE releases will now have the program MSE.master included, and all update information will be in this file. Make sure that you use the same version of] MSE and MSE.master !! V1.51 - (Beta Test) All data files and message handling are now controlled through an external program making MSE 100% compatable for multi-line / simitaneous playing !! Option added for Excelsior bbs to switch hotkeys to prompts. V1.51a- (Beta Test) Whoops !, Opened all the ports with CreatMsgPort() and tried closing them with DeletePort(), that explains some of the random crashes. MSE.master now correctly frees up the message structure memory. Added MAX,S option, and implemented key files fully. MSE is faster to exit now, as all filling is handled after the BBS has been told to return. V1.51b- (Beta Test) Key file was being cleared when a new game was started. Max purchase was incorrect in buying menu. MSE.master is now a background task, and is now safer. MSE will remove MSE.master from the system if it has locked up and run a new one. V1.51c- (Beta Test) Added support for the use of environment files, as Excelsior did not all+A1ow arguments to be passed. Removed some redundant code from MSE.master, and made it safer again. Some minor bugs fixed in MSE. V1.51d- (Public Release) Accidently fucked all the pointers to NULL after requesting the address !! Now it doesn't screw with them, and leaves ExecBase alone !! V2.00 - (Public Release) Finally made it to the last release !! Heres the list of changes: Using #pragmas instead of stubs for ROM calls to speed things up. MSE will use the IEEE library to save + space and make use of FPUs. Fixed up bug with sending single char to Excelsior, and optimized the sendchar() function to buffer strings. Fixed up more ANSIs for Excelsior mode. Fixed bug where Paragon message were incorrectly added to the data and not the text. Fixed up problem with looping when a player has no food left, or when stores are empty. Enhanced the 'List Members' and 'Other Alliance Members' lists. Tidied up the 'press any key' so that it is used when needed and skipped w䙤Vhen not needed. Fixed endless loop when receiving Transporters. Fixed up Mungwall hits. Fixed errors encontered with run away date codes. Wait()'s on correct signals now. Increased stack sizes to avoid overflows during battle. Doesn't require fast ram anymore. Redesigned MSE.Control and Message interface. Fixed 'X' teams in alliance listings. Fixed crash on 'View Alliance Members'. Gives and takes planets correctly after a battle. Uses correct variables for PSN menus. No longer cras5/hes on receipt of an encrytped message. Added player Xit option. Added checking for inactive players, removed after an absense of > 5 days. Fixed zero scores on bribed spying. Fixed bad pointer addresses when in sentinal battle. V2.10 - (Public Release) Still not the last release I guess 8^).. Players could never be totally killed from the game, fixed. Infintie loop sometimes when taking planets, fixed. V2.20 - (Public Release) Invite Super games are internal now with new optionc6 'INVITE' When teams were disolved, or player expelled, each player would get all the forces they put in, even though those forces may have been killed off, fixed to give all players back a fair percentage of what they put in, and still surviving. Fixed problem where a player could have no planets left after being wiped out by civil war, ut keep on playing. V2.30 - (Public Release) Mostly lots of little ansi fixes, and adjusted some things to make the game last a bit longer. ReallyLl too many little things to list, but this should be the last release now, though I will still fix any other little things up from time to time.. V2.35 - (Public Release) Oh well, still more bugs.. Fixed bad random number generator Harmony and morale levels could 'clock' and go negative suddenly Could crash if an alliance was disbanded with no members. Space Empire in basic is a game where you battle against other players for control of the galaxy. MSE has gone even further, and the game is now more a matter of not how well you fare in battle, but how good you are at swindling other players. You can bribe, spy, cheat and do some really despicable things to your enemy, while your pampering your friends, and sucking resources from your alliance. Seizing control of the galaxy is simple compared @DL+Mto what you have to do to stay alive ! If you don't look after your people, then they will turn on you and cost you precious time and money. You will have to plot and plan very carefully if you want any chance of winning, or getting out alive..... Read Me ! --------- As MSE is now fully working for similtaneous game play, you may have to wait in some circumstances for access to message files, or when the game is attempt@EIing to reset. Please have patiance while this is ocurring. There is a new feature to version 2.2. When you are asked to give an optional amount, you can also enter 'Xn' for multiples of the default amount, where 'n' is the multipier. ie: 'X2' will give 2 times the default amount. Starting the game ----------------- When you first play, you will be asked to enter the name you wish to use. For their you are given some planets, m@FA3!oney, food and then your on your own. Each player is allowed 5 turns per day, and each turn is comprised six stages. New players are protected from being attacked for their first 21 turns. Use them wisely. If you attack someone (or even ATTEMPT to attack someone), then your protection will be cancelled. Also, attempting an infiltration spy mission will cancel your protection. When you first login to MSE, you will be given an update of all the events that have occured in your a@G隤bsence. If any player has sent you a message, you will receive them and be given the option to reply to the message. If the message you receive is a reply to a previous message, you will be able to view the original. Some messages will be sent to you in an encrypted form, if the sender has made previous arrangments with you, you should know the code to decrypt the message, or you will have to pay the computer to decrypt it for you. If you have tapped any messages from other players@HZ, you will receive them here too, but you cannot view previous message, reply to the tapped comunications or pay for auto-decryption. Running Your Empire ------------------- 1. Ruling Round 2. Buying Round 3. Covert Round 4. Battle Round 5. Disaster/Bonus Round @I\ 6. Alliance Round Ruling Round ------------ The Ruling Round is where you get a report of the current status of your empire, and decide how to budget your credits. You must pay for the upkeep of your planets, feed your people, and pay for your army and/or spies. Food stores will only hold 100,000 kilotons, so don't rely on them too much. Buying and selling prices will change with suppl@ JHy/demand. So it is possible to make money by buying and selling food. It is advisable to grow as food as you can, by feeding your people more they will become loyal servants, starving them can lead to a revolt. Remember that the food stores are for all the players, so by buying out all the food from the stores and taking an opponants food planets you may starve your enemies people and lead them into a revolt. There are two forms of income for your empire: Ore mining and tax @ K9=gmoney. Ore money is derived from the number of ore mining planets you have. Tax money is based on the number of people in your empire. Buying Round ------------ After allocating your funds, you will be able to buy things with the money you have left over. You will be presented with a list of things you can buy, ranging from army soldiers to spies to planets. You may also visit the bank at this prompt.@ LӺ% The bank is designed to help you budget your money which can be very important at the later stages of the game. Also, another person spying on you cannot see the money that is in your bank but they can see the money in your normal credit balance. Bank accounts earn 5% interest per day. You can also take out a loan, the amount that you can take out depends on how many generic planets you own. Loans have a interest rate of 20%, and you must pay at least 20% of y@ Mour load back each turn. Your loan payments will be automatically taken out of your bank account or credits, or if you don't have enough, you will start to lose planets! If you default on loans you will get a bad credit rating, and consequently, your interest rates will increase. It's a nasty trap to fall into ! To improve your credit rating, pay back twice the minimum repayment. Note that you can only have one loan out at a time, and that refinancing is not avail@ Nuable. If you cannot make payments, and your planets do not cover the loan, all but a few of your planets will be repossed and you will never get another loan. A note on governing planets: You MUST have one governing planet for every 25 other planets. Governing planets do nothing more than sap your funds, but they are required to keep law and order in your empire. If you do not have enough, then things will get out of hand quickly. These are the differant availab@Odle planets and their uses : Food planets - Grow food for your people. Ore planets - Generate more income for you. Defence planets - Manufacture military equipment. Governing planets - Keep law and order in the galaxy. You can do Special Missions from this menu, and you will be returned here when you have finished any mission. Available also from this menu is the armoury. From here you may improve to armour of your soldiers, fighters a@P'֜nd cruisers, and improve the weapons and speed of your fighters. The price will increase depending on how many you already own, as all your old equiptment will need to be updated. The base prices of soldiers, and arms will also increase. Special Missions ---------------- Check for taps: If your communications get tapped, all the messages that you send or receive will also be sent to the player that tapped you. For a@Qd price, you can check to see if your communications have been tapped. If they are, you will have to kill all your agents to find the traitor and remove the tap. Send courier: You may also send a courier with a private message who can also give gifts of credits to the recipient. This can be useful for bribes or negotiations. Encrytped messages: Encryted messages may be sent from here to other players, you will be asked for an encrytion code between 1 and 25. If t@RPX)he receiving player doesn't know the code they will have to pay to have it unscrambled. But any spies that are tapping your messages will also get the encryted message, but they do not have the option of paying to have it decrypted, but they do get one chance to guess the code. Kill agents: If your agents get bribed, you may find them disappearing with your courier messages or giving you false information. The only way to solve this is to kill all your agents.@S0 This is one of the few options in the game which comes free of charge. This will also remove any taps that might be on your messages. Train military: Your military can also be trained further from here, to give you that edge in battle, but once they start training, they cannot fight again until the next round. Transporters: You may send your cargo ships out from here to other players, your transporters can hold 100,000 kilotons each and you may send @TZfood,soldiers, fighters, cruisers or carriers in the ships. Dissension: You can try to create properganda on your enemies planets and make the people rebel against your leader. Demoralize troops: This will demorilize your enemies troops to make it easier to defeat them in battle. Covert/Battle Round ------------------- If you have any spies, then you will be asked if you want to conduct any covert @UҜmissions against other players. You can use this to find out information about other players. But be warned that the consequences of a failed mission are severe. Note that spying on another person will void your protection. The computer will notify you of this. After spying, you will be asked if you want to do battle. Since the best way to get points is to take planets from other players, you will probably be doing this a lot. Choose the player you want to attack and @Vڂthe amount of troops you want to send over and the battle is on! Note that if you attempt to attack someone your protection will be nullified. There is always an element of chance in battle, so you always have a chance of winning (or losing). Note that if the defender is part of an alliance, then troops from that alliance will rush to his aid. If the defender is a member of YOUR alliance you will expelled from your alliance. If you are the leader then your victim@Wꓙ will be expelled rather than yourself. The game will notify you when you attack someone in your own alliance. If you emerge the victor in battle, then you will receive 10% of your enemy's planets (rounded up). You can choose the type of planets, but you can only choose among what the defender has (i.e.. if he has no defense planets, then you can't get any). If you take ALL of your enemy's planets, then you wipe that player from the game (which does wonders for your a@XW frmy's morale). Disaster/Bonus Round -------------------- Disasters/Bonuses are calculated using an algorithm dependent on the players score. Low scores will "usually" receive bonuses and high scores will "generally" have disasters. Some of these can do nothing, or affect anything from harmony to destroying planets, others are merely humorous. Any revolutions or strife on you planets will be shown @YG7here as well. Alliance Round -------------- Alliances are a VERY important part of the game. A player does not have a very good chance of surviving in the game if they are independent or if they are in a weak alliance. This much the same way as a real war situation. You must choose your alliance carefully because of this. If you are simply going to join an alliance read all the alliance descriptions carefully@Z(w. The alliance round is where you form, join, list, or otherwise manipulate alliances. New players will have the options to join an alliance, start a new alliance, list existing alliances, and quit alliance mode. If you decide to join an alliance it will prompt you for an alliance number or will list all the alliances for you. The game will show you some statistics on each alliance and show a description of the alliance written by the leader. Just follow the pro@[Ln7mpts. All alliances are given a rating, this is based on the alliances performance in battle against other alliances, and on the strength of it's recources compared to others. The rating is also affected by how it members perform in battle, so if you start to lose too many battles you may find yourself kicked out of the alliance. The rating affects none of the battles, only your descision to join. The rating is only affected by the actions it and it's members take, so even if@\y݌ you get the crap beaten out of you it will not reduce your rating, but when the alliance or it's members initiate battle, the results will affect the rating. Ratings though are always affected on the teams comparison to other teams resources. If you decide to start an alliance, you will be prompted for a name, then you will become the leader of that alliance. You must also decide how many of each kind of force to charge your members to remain in your alliance. Remember,@]sk you're a member so you also have to pay the fees. Leaders get to do a few things that no one else can do: Break up (dissolve) an alliance and kick someone out of your alliance (Expel). You may also change your alliances fees at any time. You will be the only one in your alliance that is notified when your alliance is attacked and when a player defaults on their payments. A newly formed alliance receives 21 turns of protection much the same way as a player does. Atta@^q7cking another alliance or spying on another alliance will void your protection. When you type in your description, you will be given the option of sending it as an advertisement to all the other players. The alliance maintains an army, to which individual members contribute some of their forces. This alliance army is used to protect each of the members from attack. If the alliance is disbanded, each member should get the troops it contributed back. Having a larger army@_L will help improve the team rating. Each day you must make payments to your alliance in the form of forces. The amount of the payment is determined by your leader. If you do not have enough forces to pay your fees on a certain day the game will record this in your record and when you try to join another team the leader of that team will see how many you times you balked on your previous team. You can make up for a missed payment by donating forces to your alliance (revi@`5cxew defense forces on the alliance menu). If you donate enough forces to make up for a full payment then one balk will be deducted from your record. The game will accept a negative amount of balks so you may donate ahead of time in case you think you may default in the future. Alliance leaders get a larger message menu. They may send encryted messages to their team members, messages to other alliances and their members, messages to other Alliance leaders or messages to @ a team members. After leaving the alliance menu, you will be shown the current rank of all the players, and if you have any turns remaining you can continue. If you choose to exit the game you will be able to leave private messages to any or all of the players. Winning The Game ---------------- To win MSE, you must accumulated 100,000 points. This is done mostly by squashing other players (okay, so it@!bAps not a friendly game...). When a person reaches 100,000 points or more, he becomes the "Space Lord" (a holdover from Jon Radoff's Space Empire). If he stays there for 14 days, he wins the game and it starts over. If more than one player has over 100,000 points, then the person with the most points is the Space Lord. To prevent a player in a large alliance from winning without even participating in a single battle himself you cannot be a space lord if you are a member of a @"c"Xteam. Note that there can be only ONE winner. That generally means you have to stab somebody in the back if you're part of an alliance and you want to win. This becomes more significant towards the end of the game. Since most players will not be on their own a few teams will emerge as the strong ones. You will eventually have to attack someone in your own team. Miscellaneous Stuff ------------------- There@#d are more features within the game which have not been documented, some will be entirly random, and others will only be available after a set logic. The winner of each game will have their name recored in a data file for their entry into the MSE Super Challange to be held later in the year. Any bugs, questions or suggestions can be sent to me on The Nut Factory BBS. Hints and Tips -------------- When you first star@$eAt, you are given 21 turns of protection, this is your chance to get ahead. These tips can help you get the edge on everyone else.. 1. You will get the most money from ore planets, but as you buy more, the price will increase. Try buying only in large lots so you will have more money. 2. Keep your cash in the bank, the other players won't know how much you have and you will earn interest on it. 3. If you take out a loan, spend it all on ore planets, you will make enough profit each@%f turn to pay back much more than required to the bank. 4. Don't waste any money on defence or military until your protection is just about to run out, you can buy more planets with the money you save. 5. Give your people more supplies than they need, and they will produce more and be happier. 6. Watch the news to see who's fighting who, and who is joining which alliance. People might still be friends and team up against you even if they are in differant alliances. When your prot@&gection runs out.. 1. Spy on every one's military at every chance to gauge how fast they are growing and if they are a threat. 2. Put your army into training whenever you won't be using them, it will help you next time you want to fight. 3. DONT piss people off too much if you aren't very strong, you might find yourself wiped out. 4. Invest in lots of defence stations on your last turn, anything can happen in a day. And most important of all.. If you can handle it, start an All@'h2Qiance, and make it a good one, by becmomeing the leader of the most powerful alliance, you are well on your way to winning. The leader of an Alliance can direct its forces against other alliances, so you can deplete an alliances forces just before you attack a member of it yourself. Don't stay by yourself at the early parts of the game, you need protection, and there is safety in numbers, so start an alliance or join one fast (if they will have you). To make your alliance strong: @( 1. Send messages to members of other alliance members offering them better protection to join you. 2. Send bribes and gifts to stronger players to get them into your alliance. ij ]3~}|{zyxwvutsrqponmlkj(E+FShowNewspik>< o oH~$H$I,xGhr <Z`&Q)O)N&n +g @ (4` :")Al,dT ,,)@"<N:Jg)@")@lЬ, n$m)@)AA N$`.@Bp"<0N&nCpN)@fpd`)kJg~ k"h r)IЁ^@)@H@@"<N:LJfp/g @)@ Sԁ SQ S" Q"/`JA\NA\N)@/$@ *$g,l @"(N)@"N l/Hlh h$)hNN p` /ilSe(V$l%,x n$mJg AYN$.J ,g @NNN ,g "l,xN.Jg ,l",gN,xN|"lN`,x ,g"lN."lNb L~Nudos.library/ ar faZACN*@JfaDa`F lf>Jf8p0,/Hz|HoNpAa` ,AapAaJO p rA"MNzJfpADa* MNHxN^aXO*_NuMSE:_Message.datarb Day %2d: GLOBAL NEWS im]L MSE:_Message.textDoorControl%dDoorReply%dDoorNameDoorReply0DoorReply1DoorReply2DoorReply3DoorReply4DoorReply5DoorReply6DoorReply7DoorReply8DoorReply9Couldn't allocate DoorMsg!DoorControl port not located!PpAalHzHoNpAaVpAaLPOPNuYOH.*HAC8NX&@Jg( r KN KN@ J/ f KL(XNL(XONuPH~,xN|/HzHoN:O C,xNz)@g /Hz|HoNO CNz)@gRp f,xNvNin`l)@AP"@#H d@0;N ,8DP\htpA"N`vpA"N`jpA"N`^pA"N`RpA"N`FpA"N`:pA"N`.pA"N`"pA"N`pA"N` pAN)@pjr,xN:)@f ANHp `TC Q| Q!l Y1|j/Hz>HoNO CNz)@fAN"lpjN.p ` L@PNu/"l3| l,xN lN lN ,g"@pjN. ,g @NBNXO,_NuH*H l1@1|Cf l"l,xN lN lNL`NuNpaYOA.g yNioAXONuYOA.g yNXONuH*l`&UpЭ"M,xN.*K fB`$pЬl l)h)hl"@ ( ,xN.JfLhNu / oNU"Or NXA0Jf fBN]Nu / oNU"O"AA0f fBN]Nu0123456789abcdef / oQO"O2Af fBPONu o"oH0 $Hr & +g -fvRH0m n$҂ҁJfҀ`⒀`" SL Nu o/ *H-f0 ,N +@+@f p )@p`+lpB Bp*_Nu oH *H&M` pA)0g rt `rJf L(NuipR / o"/ H66,**HN N &@Jfp`+f)|pp`+gHx rNXO+gp " MN $@Jf"+$ &,lN*Rg\ `n& $ "+,lNRgB*J"+AT$vNRg*Ap "N $@ f"+$ &,lNRg `,lN|)@pN)@pLllNu / o"/ QOH76,./H$N N*@Jf p)@p`-f)|pp)@p`Bp&o$"-$ &,lN*RfN|)@pN)@p`lJg-f `\$Kp *f "-vN Bp "N*@JgG` r gRe&o$* p" KN @Jfiqg@ ` LlPONu /"//o H7*/ ,.N N*@Jf p)@p`XBp&S"-$,lN"RfN|)@pp)@p`* Jg Sg Sg ` ` І`"-t&,lNL`Nu /H.N N6*@Jfp`6-f("-,lN-g m N0 -
